New hitch in Ethiopian border disputeStaff Reporter ADDIS ABABA, 17 October 2003 :Ethiopian prime minister rejects border finding. ADDIS ABABA: Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has defied pressure from the United Nations and the United States, by telling parliament that he will demand new negotiations to solve the country's border dispute with Eritrea. Meles also rejected a legally binding ruling made by the independent Hague-based Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission. He declared the proposed 1 000 km international border drafted by the commission as "null and void", and said any attempt to force Ethiopia to accept the commission's ruling, would only heighten tension in the Horn of Africa.
The EEBC’s Crime of Injustice, the Complicity of the UN, and the Betrayal of the International Community against the Irob Minority in Ethiopia: A Critical Statement and an Urgent Call for Justice By the Reverend Abba Tesfamariam Baraki An Irob-Ethiopian-American Citizen Washington, DC, USA 14 October 2003 What Now Mr Prime Minister? By Brhane Habte-Mariam "The people were asked to make contributions, human contributions in the form of young recruits to use as gun fodder, financial contributions in the form of cash to be collected from the meagre salaries and wages earned by government employees and workers of other local institutions and organizations, money from every Ethiopian engaged in gainful employment and business and lastly moral support in the form of accepting the government's justification for the ensuing war." "The EEBC took almost two years to finally come up with a decision that granted Badme yet again to Eritrea. When the decision of the EEBC was made official with a borderline carving out Badme into Eritrea, Ethiopian officials were dumbfounded unable to explain this to the residents of the region or to the people of Tigray and to the general population of the country and to all those who contributed their sons to this war. Many of their sons never came back and the majority of them never also had a decent burial. At the present time the ghosts of the young warriors who fell for Badme are coming to haunt the Prime Minister, who woke up from his irresponsible slumber to lodge a formal protest with the Security Council of the United Nations only two weeks ago, after a year had elapsed since the decision of the EEBC became official. This was too little and too late. Hence the summary dismissal of the protest by the Security Council of the United Nations." The big dilemma for the Prime Minister now is what to do next. [source: Addistribune] Is it based on a study paper or on hearsay? During the Ethio-Eritrean war, two foreign scholars had come forward in support of either of the warring parties. These were Paul Henze, who has to this day continued his support to EPRDF, and Greenfield, who stood by the EPLF but whose voice gradually vanished into the thin air. The Prime Minister said in a letter addressed to the UN Security Council the colonial treaties which are the basis of the Algiers Agreement and which should have been the key basis of the Algiers Agreement and which should have been the key basis for the delimitation and demarcation of the boundary leave Badme inside Ethiopia. The uncontested parts of the boundary, specifically the whole eastern sector of the boundary and that part of the central sector where the River Mereb constitutes the boundary, can be demarcated without waiting the setting up of the alternative mechanism. Commentary WONDERFUL Path TO DEMOCRACY By Dr G Bekele - 6 August 2003 Pollution Concern Drinking Poisonous Water I am so happy to learn that this year (2003) is declared to be an international year of fresh water. Being one of the victims of polluted water and air; at the same time; I feel helpless and in despair when I think of myself, my whole family and for the 100,000 voiceless residents of Wonji, Wonji/shoa and Metehara. Thousands of children and adults are at risk by drinking the poisonous water in these industrial communities.
