To the mystique of independence we oppose the reality of fraternity. - Felix Houphouet- Boigny of the Ivory Coast. Just like the dreamers of the "Pan-African movement", the Libyan leader Muammar Gadafi recently managed to instill an idea of a new "African Union", which interestingly shows a preponderance of being taken seriously by the African politicians on the ground. It is not clear how such reorganization would be different from or better than the already existing Organization of African Unity (OAU), but there's the usual mimicry of European norms without there being a corresponding realization in Africa within the African realities.

Commentaries/Critiques
The dilemma of the Tigrians
By Siraj Kahsay (October 04/2001)
"In the name of the people, TPLF leaders have established business companies. Those businesses seemingly represent economic progress that deceptively suggests to be benefiting the people of Tigray. The truth is to make those businesses operational, TPLF has been forcing Tigrians to work with little or no compensation. Those companies have been used as instruments of robbing the meager earnings of the people for the exclusive benefit of the few "liberators and revolutionaries" who have unscrupulously fattened their individual bank accounts. Strangely enough, those same companies, to the surprise of millions of Tigrians and a considerable number of non-Tigrians, have been generally eyed by non-Tigrians as a source of wealth and comfort of all Tigrians. Actually, some even went as far as satirizing "Tigray iskilema, lelaw ager yidma". Is this really the case?"...
"Such scholars have been unscrupulously engaged in vilifying one ethnic group as a whole: those scholars refer to Tigrians as un-Ethiopians, traitors, racists and even cancerous who simply deserve scissors of a social surgeon."...

Alula Abba Nega: an Ethiopian and African Hero
By Dr. Ghelawdewos Araia
There are many heros and heroines that have captured our imagination and became the centerpiece of historical anecdotes. But there are very few born leaders that have been fascinations of societies for centuries and will remain so for generations to come. Alula Abba Nega is one such a leader, and a charismatic magnanimous political persona at that.
Where Democracy Ends, Dictatorship Begins
Afera Gebru (September 20, 2001)
Since the Prime Minister Meles Zenawi mob rule has started, the current situation in Ethiopia continues widening the cycle of violence. The possibility of a lasting political settlement is gone in the direction of never land. The crisis is profoundly deeper than many political actors may have realized. A fundamental factor has been the Prime Minister that has eliminated or blocked the function of all institutions under his decree.

"Ethiopia, one of the ancient nation states of the world, possesses glorious wealth of history and heritage of mystic proportions. Being a mother of millions of world-class heroes and heroines, her recorded history tells it all that Ethiopia humiliated her enemies who ventured to violet her sovereignty and territorial integrity. Those enemies from near and those from afar continents of Europe and other places had to suffer the same fate of humiliation in the hands of Ethiopian patriots."

"We are in disbelief presently to hear that the Meles Regime has announced to the residents of Zalambesa that they will not be allowed to rebuild their homes and businesses in the town - a town where they belong and where their community life and economic and cultural life is rooted - a town where their existence as community is based. The residents have been told - in effect- to abandon the town and reestablish themselves elsewhere. This is simply a scheme to disperse and destroy the social fiber that has kept the Zalambesa community as a cohesive and active community that is both aware of its patriotic duties and ready to defend its own interest."

"Eritrea Vs Ethiopia Or Eritrea With Ethiopia?" Addis Tribune (Addis Ababa)
OPINION by Brhane Habte-Mariam (September 7, 2001)
In the first place the "independence" of Eritrea from Ethiopian "colonialism" (or "Africanism" depending on one's perspective) or the secession of Eritrea from its Ethiopian homeland is the most unjust political settlement in the history of modern Africa. Eritrea's "independence" was a landmark among the many injustices in the history of Africa, because it was the first time a united African nation was forced to break into two states.
TPLF CONGRESS - A ONE-MAN SHOW
Deki-Alula Editorial - SEPT 8, 2001
Ethiopia's bleak life under Meles Zenawi
"Since Prime Minister Meles Zenawi orchestrated a successful coup against those now-familiar TPLF dissidents six months ago, things have been real bad for the Prime Minister, for the dissidents, for the Ethiopian people and for our country altogether. Meles now lives away from his so-called power-base, Tigray, because he is seen there as a fugitive - if not a disguised Shaebian intruder - who is always on the run protected by his heavily-armed and heavily-paid hirelings."
Where to go from here? EastAfrica Forum

"Now Tigray and Tigrayans seem to be once again in dire strait political crisis the temptation is to give away everything the people fought for and paid in kind and compromise so as Tigray could get acceptance by other ethnic groups that make up Ethiopia proper. Well, the idea is fine but I have trouble with it and I will explain what it is."
"Since the TPLF/EPRDF came to power, every little shack opened to educating Tigrian kids has sent shock waves one after another among political leaders and supporters as if Tigray has robbed them of their meagre resources, although we know better. The money the shacks were built from came from Tigrians and foreign aid during the great famine years."

August 25: Democracy’s Triumph over Tyranny
By Berhe G.L.
"In August 25, Ethiopians from the Tigrai region would meet in Washington DC. This has already struck fear in the hearts of the Lords of Poverty and their mad dogs that bark whenever the Eritrean mercenary Meles Zenawi’s rule looks coming to an end by the end of the day. The Merchants of National Deprivation think that Tigrians coming out of their 10-year-old doldrums means they are going to build a bridge that would take them into the larger subject of solving social problems at national level. To do this, they have to work closely with other Ethiopian groups struggling for the same cause."

Democracy in the Context of Ethiopian Politics
By Dr. Ghelawdewos Araia {August 16, 2001)
..."In fact, in order for this society to enjoy democracy, the leadership [state, party or otherwise] must operate democratically within its own parameters. A leadership that is not democractic cannot possibly persue democractic processes in the larger society, and may even resort to banning some basic democractic rights such as freedom of speech and writing, freedom to demonstrate and assemble peaceably, and freedom of inclusion in the political and decision making process. If these fundamental rights are not enjoyed and practiced by the Ethiopian people, then there is no need of logical thinkering. That means, there is no democracy and that is very dangerous."...

Where we are heading?

Where are we heading? Is the present regime of Ethiopia leading the people for their progress and welfare or towards their unrecoverable downfall? This cannot be left to history but it can be witnessed with multitude of evidences presently. Our cherished institutions have been eroded, our constitution reversed, developmental projects and establishments dismantled, rule of law evaded, the basic inalienable human rights are glossed over, opinion expressions are muffled systematically, reign of terror and demaguogic propagandas are every day themes of life, feelings and expressions of the ordinary citizens are desperate and gloomy, there is no way out but terror and agonies.
