Focus The first Miss World Ethiopia ![]() ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia- The first ever Miss World Ethiopia (MWE) was chosen on october 23rd, 2003 in the final competition held at the Addis Ababa Hilton. Miss Hayat Ahmed Mohammed, age twenty-one, was chosen by a panel of nine international judges as Miss World Ethiopia 2003. Atetegeb Tesfaye and Yorrdanos Teshager respectively won second and third runner up. The first of its kind gathering was attended by well over 500 with dignitaries, international judges, cameramen and celebrities encouraging the anticipation and excitement. The spectacular lighting effects put the final touches on the mood that had twenty-five young ladies wondering who among them would have a dream come true. Press Release Tecola Hagos Launches a New Website November 18, 2003 - Washington, DC Tecola Hagos launched a new website today focusing on political commentary and issues relevant to Ethiopians at home and abroad, with articles contributed by current Ethiopian scholars. The new website will concentrate on current issues dealing with the government and political situation in Ethiopia, as well as human rights, freedom of the press and the future of Ethiopia and its people. Distinguished authors will contribute to the site. Contributions from other Ethiopian scholars and distinguished Ethiopian authors around the world will all be considered for publication on the website. Platitudes Aplenty There has never been a dearth of self-adulatory opinions on the part of the incumbent government here. In fact, what the Ethiopian people are suffering from is a plethora of an endless session of brainwashing conducted so incompetently on television by government officials. Television has, in fact, become the purveyor of so many seemingly infallible opinions expressed by the Prime Minister in particular – supplemented, of course, by what his cronies in the “distinguished” personages of his loyal ministers would like us to believe. Lawyers Association (EWLA) in 1995, of which she is still the executive
director. After returning to Ethiopia from the US, where she received the Hunger
Project Award – known as the African Nobel Prize – for representing women in
Ethiopia, she told IRIN about the difference her organisation has made in
ensuring women’s rights, but also why Ethiopia is still an extremely difficult
country to live in as a woman.
