TRIBUTE TO GEBREMESKEL HAILU
By Dr. Ghelawdewos Araia
"I have known Gebremeskel Hailu at Haile Selassie I University (now Addis Ababa University) beginning the Fall of 1969-1970 academic year. He then just returned from a field service program in the United States and we use to call him 'Gieb' for short."
"The Ethiopia-Eritrea conflict is transitioning to a new stage. This new stage is being characterized by the actions and statements of Meles. By attacking Ethiopians disturbed by his lack of concern for Ethiopia's national interests (seacoast, currency issue, confiscated goods, unpaid Eritrean loans) Meles seems to be sending a signal to Eritreans. There is still a lot of common ground between the EPLF and TPLF; they still have common enemies in Ethiopia. Meles is demonstrating that his new priority enemies are his Ethiopian opponents, not Eritrea."
"The problem is no longer Eritrea. The problem is Meles - Eritrea's once and future loyal servant. Until Meles is held accountable for his actions, Ethiopians can have no confidence that they will be represented at the EPLF-TPLF reconciliation talks."
"Ethiopians have no power to influence TPLF policy. Ethiopians have no idea whether or not there are secret EPLF-TPLF contacts going on behind their backs."

Somalia: intellectuals say Ethiopia is against their country's stability
BBC Monitoring Service - United Kingdom; Nov 21, 2001
"Ethiopia is trying to convince the US government that it has been waging a war against Islamic fundamentalists in the Horn of Africa, but its actions and its choice of friends in Somalia and the region demonstrates Ethiopia embraces those it feels will advance her agenda while any who are an obstacle are labelled terrorists. Consider the following examples:-
Ethiopians will not forget this kind of horror It was none other than Ethiopia's ally Mr. Muse Sudi's militia that committed this act of terrorism. Why then would Ethiopia continue to support such a man?
If Al-Qai'dah was helping the Somali National Alliance (SNA) of General Aydid, in the 3 October 1993 battle in Mogadishu, in which 18 American soldiers were killed, why is Ethiopia now allied with the SNA?
