Coffee: An empty cup for growers
OXFORD, England: When it comes to making money out of food or drink, coffee is the king. No other sector produces profits quite like it. Major coffee roasters are riding of a cash cow that seemingly never runs out of milk. At the top of the ladder, things couldn't be better. But at the bottom, 25 million farmers are sinking deeper and deeper into poverty.

Haile's 'homecoming'
Gebrselassie's first U.S. run since 1996 Games was worth the wait

BOSTON -- Haile Gebrselassie's bid to break the world record at 3,000 meters fell well short on Saturday, but the featured race at the Adidas Boston Indoor Games was worth the wait.
Not since he won the 10,000 meters at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics had the Ethiopian legend run in the States. To hear it from him, the man with nine world titles, two Olympic gold medals and 18 world records on his resume still considered the race a highlight.

Analysis The Inauguration of the Gilgel Gibe Dam: Kudos for Ethiopia and an Admonition to the Wise
By Dr. Yosef Yacob
"The western disposition to promote small scale project driven alternatives such as rain water harnessing, earthen dams, diesel generators, geothermal energy, solar energy, wind energy, potable water projects, drilling of small wells, promoting traditional agriculture, harnessing small streams, resettling populations, digging ponds, and reliance on food aid will not bring about the progress deserved by the Ethiopian people. "

Analysis From UNDUGU to the Nile Basin Initiative: An Enduring Excercis in Futility
Yosef Yacob, JD, LM, PhD
The articles highlight the, competing aspirations of the riparians and suggest the need for cooperation, consultation, and collaboration to achieve an equitable utilization of the shared resource. Furthermore, devising a fair, just and coherent plan for the full and most efficient use of the sub-basin’s waters demands accommodations by modifications of existing uses or future plans, consideration of priorities and alternatives, or compensation for abstaining from taking action.

Commentary Causes of the Ethiopian-Eritrean conflict
By: Atnaf Segued
Ethiopia has been an independent nation since time in memorial. This independence has been maintained not by chance or miracle, but by the blood of its valiant sons and daughters. Ethiopia has fought more wars than any other nation against invaders and defended itself successfully.

Appeal A RENEWED APPEAL ON BEHALF OF THE BORDER AREA PEOPLES
Irob Community in North America
We hope that the year 2004 will be a year in which the Ethiopians living in the localities bordering Eritrea such as the Afars, the Irobs, the Kunamas and other Ethiopians get a break from bombardments and kidnappings perpetuated by the Eritrean armed forces and from international intimidation to deprive them of their citizenship and/or their ancestral lands. We also hope that other Ethiopians in Gambela and elsewhere in the country get relief from daily sufferings in their own land.

Selam All Concerned,
Given the fact that Western governments are heavily involved in the border debacle, it is worth revisiting this document [recently de-classified by the U.S. government].
This is a briefing memo prepared for the U.S. President Franklin D. Rossevelt by Lauchlin Currie (a member of FDR's staff). Makes one question if Britain, officially Ethiopia's ally at that time, truly had the Ethiopian people's interest at heart.
At the very least, this document sheds light on British (Western?) diplomacy styles and tactics.

Commentary It Can Be Done
By Brhane Habte-Mariam
Today, if there is a political issue that the majority of Ethiopians would agree upon, it could as well be to see an end to the oppressive order of the current regime and a change of government from the same politics, the same leader and the same idea that have been misguiding this country down the drain of international humility and beggary for the last twelve years and more.[Source: AddisTribune]
