This World`s whole approach to Life is based on the WAY OF GET-of vanity, selfishness, competition, lust and greed. New laws are expected to be approved by Ethiopia's parliament next month that would restrict the country's private print media. By Danna Harman | Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor (1/28/2003): "This is a death sentence passed on the freedom of press in Ethiopia," writes Amare Aregawi, editor of the "Reporter." He points out that in a country where both radio and TV are still state owned, the private print press is the only nongovernment voice being heard. By Belay Gesesse The issue of land privatization in Ethiopia is one of the many hurdles one needs to overcome in order to tackle poverty and hunger. And there is no question that it is a very crucial hurdle one needs to resolve. Hi Mr. Asghedom, I read your article and I would like to comment on a specific issue - the Doctrine of the EOC what you mentioned in your article. Often people confuse or fail to make the distinction between the “Doctrine” and the “Canon” of the EOC. By Wossen H. Michael (1/23/03) Ethiopia is beyond political crossroads. Now it stands on the brink...of being or not being. At international level, the UN and the government of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi are working fast to put in place what the Ethiopian people have unequivocally opposed: border demarcation that rewarded Eritrea with more territories from a country already punished as landlocked by its "leaders." Dear Prime Minister, We are writing on behalf of the World Association of Newspapers and the World Editors Forum, which represent 18,000 publications in 100 countries, to express our serious concern at the government's consideration of proposals that may have a serious, adverse effect on freedom of the press. By Yared Mesfin, January 21, 2003 Let me start by thanking the authors of two insightful articles on this issue: Asegedech Alemu Mekonnen’s “The Pety Politics of Ethiopian Oppostion Forces” and Abera Gena’s “ Politics in the Diaspora Needs Serious Attention”. The recent bickering among domestic opposition parties has become a source of disappointment for many among which this writer is one of them. An official Statement of the Afar Revolutionary Democratic Unity Front on the current issues (January 18, 2003) The voice of two distinguished guest, Dorothy Fadiman and Amy L. Hill, from CONCENTRIC MEDIA's OSCAR-nominated, EMMY Award- Winning an independent documentary movie producer and director will hit the air wave of the San Francisco Bay Area on Sunday Jan. 19, 2003 at 90.5FM starting 05:00pm. Sketching a Long, But Not So Glorious, History Asghedom Ghebremichael, Canada (1/16/03):"Ever since the famine problem resurfaced in Ethiopia, not only Ethiopians but also others who love Ethiopia and Ethiopians appear to be angry and frustrated. Many are asking why Ethiopia? The Motherland possesses an abundance of natural resources and an untapped labor force of a highly productive young generation. If Sudan, Egypt, Israel, and many other countries that do not have comparable natural resources and labor force can feed their citizens, why not Ethiopia?" By Asegedech Alemu Mekonnen:"Ethiopia is not a convenient place for opposition forces. The current regime is repressive and dictatorial. But it is much better than the previous regimes in terms of limited tolerance to opposition movements. This fact, although not popular, must be accepted by all who want to bring about positive changes to Ethiopia." "In the last year or so I have been following the emergence of the Ethiopian Democratic Party with curious eyes. Preliminary indications are that this party is showing the elements of proactive leadership that is so far missing in the history of our struggle to establish a democratic system. Like many of my compatriots, I had hopped that the many opposition groupings will break out of the shell in which they comfortably hid for so many years and have a fresh look at the current problems, challenges, and opportunities the existing situation hold for them. Unfortunately many of them have chosen to stay where they were. That is their comfort zone and they are entitled to stay there. But Ethiopia and Ethiopians are not." Source:Ethiomedia.com Ethiopian Open Society Institute (January 16, 2003) "The Ethiopian Diaspora salutes you for your sincere efforts in making President Bush’s “compassionate conservatism” mantra a reality by championing the cause of 65 million Ethiopians. You are a leader to whom the attribute “A friend in need is a friend indeed” is most apropos. At a time when international terrorism has marginalized the domestic terrorism inflicted by Meles Zenawi’s regime in Ethiopia, we salute you for bringing our cause to the front burner." TISJD (January 15, 2003):It is true we Ethiopians are facing a natural disaster and an AIDS epidemic. In response to this, Humanitarian Organizations and Ethiopians throughout the world are engaged in Fundraising activities.

The Ethiopian-born and American-based film director Haile Gerima has often lamented
Hollywood's tendency to either ignore or to denigrate the experience of
Africans. For three decades Gerima has waged a lonely campaign to redress this
problem, making films such as Adwa (1999), a docudrama about Ethiopian
resistance to Italian imperialism, and the forthcoming Teza, a feature
film about student life in Ethiopia.
By Surafel G. [Source: Addis Tribune] Leelai
is a soft-spoken, all-smiles young man who looks forward to a challenge in the
film business, and in most cases, overcomes them with graceful ease. In a very
short time, he became an actor who hit the stage and screen; and a producer who
brought his film "On Tip Toe: Gentle Steps to Freedom" very close to winning the
2001 Academy Award in the best documentary category.
By Arnold [Source Addis Tribune] The difficulties of balancing academic freedom on the one hand and the ruling party’s voracious appetite for meddling in university/higher education governance issues for which it has neither the expertise nor the objectivity and good will to manage are now under national/international spotlight as a result of the recent unfortunate events at AAU.
