The Blue Nile -which contributes about two-thirds of the water of the Nile    What Benefits Will Ethiopia gain from Membership of the Nile Basin Initiative?
By Gebre Tsadik Degefu, Dr., Jur. [Part II]
" It makes one wonder what the policy of the current Ethiopian Government is. Allowing Egypt to be involved in any Nile-related project (s) is inviting problem. That reminds us of the old saying by the Roman poet Virgil (70-19 B.C.) "I fear the Greeks even when they bring gifts." For Egypt, such an invitation is a welcome opportunity to be involved in our internal affairs. As the Greek historian Thucydides (460-400 B.C.) said, "Knowledge of the past helps to anticipate the future". We Ethiopians should relearn our history, particularly of the last 150 years to properly evaluate our relation with Egypt and what she has done to us."

Open Letter to His Excellency, PM Meles Zenawi
By G. E. Gorfu
Dear Prime Minister, I only have one question: When did Ethiopia become a protectorate of Egypt? Otherwise, why on earth is Ethiopia requesting the permission of Egypt to use the waters that rightly belong to her?

Reversing Brain Drain: A Personal Testimony
I am an intellectual product of the Addis Ababa University (AAU). I received my Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy and a Masters Degree in Chemistry from AAU in the 1980s. Although I came to the U.S. to pursue a higher education, like many other Ethiopian colleagues in the Diaspora, I remained in the U.S. after completing my studies in the 1990s. Since then, I have been looking for opportunities to give back or "To reverse the brain drain."

Myth and Reality about the Link between the Peace Initiative, Socio-Economic Development in Ethiopia
Addis Tribune: By Fekade Shewakena:"Ethiopia’s poverty and development efforts have a complex structural problem, a good part of which has to do with bad policy and sheer mismanagement. EPRDF officials also omit to mention the moral condition of the citizenry as an important factor in helping development efforts. The humiliation sustained by the Ethiopian people because of their government’s failures and incompetence that resulted in loss of confidence and a demoralized public are very important factors that negatively affect development efforts over time."

   Nile restrictions anger Ethiopia
" And from time to time Egyptian presidents have threatened countries with military action if they move. While I cannot completely discount the sabre-rattling I do not think it is a feasible option.    The Nile, Ethiopia and Egypt
It looks like Ethiopia is finally asserting its rights to the Nile. The BBC’s Mike Thomson quotes Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles as saying, “If Egypt were to plan to stop Ethiopia from using the Nile waters it would have to occupy Ethiopia and no country on earth has done that in the past”. I commend the Prime Minister for stating Ethiopia’s rights in an unequivocal way. At the same time, I would also have liked to know the contents of the treaty Ethiopia and Egypt signed with regards to the use of the waters of the Blue Nile. Are we reneging on any thing we have agreed?

Tirunesh Dibaba runs 14:32.93 World Indoor 5000m record
Tirunesh Dibaba
Boston - USA (1/30/2005): With two members of Ethiopia's Athens Olympic 5000m squad (including gold medallist Mesert Defar) entered in the 3000m, the entry of the third, Dibaba, went little remarked in the longer race, but Mesert Defar pacemaker Yelena Kanales set a blistering pace, pulling the race through the first kilometre at 2:55.8 and the second 5:50.9. (All splits are unofficial hand times.) The record attempt, though unannounced, was clearly on. By the end of the first kilometre, Kanales had pulled Dibaba and her older sister, Ejegayehu, the Olympic 10,000m silver medallist, five seconds ahead of any pursuit; after eight laps, the gap was ten seconds and growing.
