"Some of the results are encouraging, too. Infant mortality is said to have dropped from 141 per 1,000 live births in 2000 to 123 per 1,000 in 2005; over 70% of children are now in school, and access to clean water has more than doubled in ten years."

"This is where Ethiopia misses out badly. Take telecoms. While the rest of Africa has been virtually transformed in just a few years by a revolution in mobile telephony, Ethiopia stumbles along with its inept and useless government-run services."

Instead of burying oneself in the sand - the ostrich syndrome - the best critique of my article would have been a thoughtful analysis that is credible, plausible, and enumerates in plain but coherent English what Ethiopians can do for their country.

button image   Beyond the Millennium, Beyond Illusion and Cynicism, and the Challenges of Development (By Ghelawdewos Araia)
Beyond the Millennium celebration, however, Ethiopia has a more critical function to undertake that I will address in this paper. Beyond the illusion and cynicism, what Ethiopians should do is challenge the government of Ethiopia (more specifically the Meles regime) on matters of governance, justice, education and health, etc. while at the same time live up to the challenges on issues surrounding the development and transformation of Ethiopia.

Meles
If you are a just person and if you believe in reconciliation, why is Tamrat Liyne still in prison? He did not kill a single life. You, yourself and the CUD who were involved in the death of about 200 precious lives, are walking free. Ato Tamrat Liyne has been languishing in prison for mere corruption, probably took some money. Is it true he is in prison because of corruption? What corruption has he done which is making him more criminal than being involved in the death of 200 lives, and many injuries?

Tamrat Layne has been languishing for all these years in prison. When the government has given a second chance to the 38, why did not the government give a second chance to Tamrat Layne? This is unjust, unfair, discrimination.

I have read the writings of the respected Professor Tecola Hagos. I do not know him in person, but from my communication on-line with him, he is a respectable Ethiopian educator and very intelligible person. He is open minded; he is not narrow. He has a wealth of experiences one ever can have and he is open to share his unparalleled wisdom unlike many Ethiopians scholars.

button image   Speaking words of Truth and Reasons
I think it is overdue now to keep quiet. We have to break the ice of silence when injustice is reigning in our country. Yes, there is a lot of talk about development in Ethiopia, but there is no a lot of talk about justice, equality, harmony.

Peasant Revolution in Ethiopia: The Tigray People's Liberation Front, 1975-1991 (African Studies)
Peasant Revolution in Ethiopia Almost unnoticed, in the wake of the overthrow of Emperor Haile-Selassie, the coming to power of the military, and the ongoing independence struggle in Eritrea, a band of students launched an insurrection from the northern Ethiopian province of Tigray. Calling themselves the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), they built close relations with Tigray's poverty-stricken peasants and on this basis liberated the province in 1989, and formed an ethnic-based coalition of opposition forces that assumed state power in 1991. This book chronicles that history and focuses in particular on the relationship of the revolutionaries with Ethiopia's peasants.

Allowing the passage of H.R. 2003 is such gross violation of the Sovereignty of the State of Ethiopia in its own internal affairs, which will set bad precedent and deform our international relations for generations to come. We, Ethiopians, must able to look far into the future and not be diabled by current difficulties from dreaming freely about our destiny. No one nation can willy-nilly dicate to us what to do with our onw lives.
