Isn't Civic Society What We Need?
The Daily Monitor (Addis Ababa)
Addis Ababa: September 4, 2001
Civic societies are very important in countries like Ethiopia. These societies, in the form of 'iddirs' and 'mahbers' have been the supportive structures behind the otherwise dysfunctional socio-economic fabric in which our societies live in. |

Meles´ Regime Abandons Zalambesa.
September 9, 2001
By Ad hoc Committee of Zalambesa-Irob Region zalambesa_irob@yahoo.com
"We are in disbelief presently to hear that the Meles Regime has announced to the residents of Zalambesa that they will not be allowed to rebuild their homes and businesses in the town - a town where they belong and where their community life and economic and cultural life is rooted - a town where their existence as community is based. The residents have been told - in effect- to abandon the town and reestablish themselves elsewhere. This is simply a scheme to disperse and destroy the social fiber that has kept the Zalambesa community as a cohesive and active community that is both aware of its patriotic duties and ready to defend its own interest."

"Eritrea Vs Ethiopia Or Eritrea With Ethiopia?"
Addis Tribune (Addis Ababa)
OPINION by Brhane Habte-Mariam (September 7, 2001)
In the first place the "independence" of Eritrea from Ethiopian "colonialism" (or "Africanism" depending on one's perspective) or the secession of Eritrea from its Ethiopian homeland is the most unjust political settlement in the history of modern Africa. Eritrea's "independence" was a landmark among the many injustices in the history of Africa, because it was the first time a united African nation was forced to break into two states.
TPLF CONGRESS - A ONE-MAN SHOW
Deki-Alula Editorial - SEPT 8, 2001
Ethiopia's bleak life under Meles Zenawi
"Since Prime Minister Meles Zenawi orchestrated a successful coup against those now-familiar TPLF dissidents six months ago, things have been real bad for the Prime Minister, for the dissidents, for the Ethiopian people and for our country altogether.
Meles now lives away from his so-called power-base, Tigray, because he is seen there as a fugitive - if not a disguised Shaebian intruder - who is always on the run protected by his heavily-armed and heavily-paid hirelings."
Where to go from here? EastAfrica Forum
By Haileselassie Girmay
"Now Tigray and Tigrayans seem to be once again in dire strait political crisis the temptation is to give away everything the people fought for and paid in kind and compromise so as Tigray could get acceptance by other ethnic groups that make up Ethiopia proper. Well, the idea is fine but I have trouble with it and I will explain what it is."
"Since the TPLF/EPRDF came to power, every little shack opened to educating Tigrian kids has sent shock waves one after another among political leaders and supporters as if Tigray has robbed them of their meagre resources, although we know better. The money the shacks were built from came from Tigrians and foreign aid during the great famine years."

Free Market or Capitalist Economy and the Talk about Globalization
By Wondimu Yigzaw
I have in my last article (The Search for Ideology-Legesse Zenawi’s Dilemma) tried to reveal and retrace the ideological base of Legesse Zenawi, malversation of Ethiopia and dictatorial measures of the last ten years of his seizure of power. Now completely "forgetful" of his Marxist-Leninist and Stalinist background, he has become quasi-religious of the advantages of free market (capitalist) economy for the betterment of the Ethiopian society.
