THE PRICE OF PEACE IS ETERNAL VIGILANCE The Algiers fiasco has been orchestrated and signed hastily by Melles simply to satisfy the whims of the then already defunct Clinton era, and it is becoming clear lately that we are on a losing side of this debacle. It is really a nightmare to see our sacred land, a land of Alulla Aba Negga being handed over to such a troublesome miniature state. It is really unthinkable. Now let's come to the issue at hand. First off all, did the "Algiers agreement" stand to bring into effect our national, political enter alia interests? This time honored watershed of our recent history begs an honest answer bereft of political sophism from the high echelon of the incumbent government of Ethiopia. It really runs contrary to logic to defeat an adversary and sit with the enemy in equal terms to resolve a contentious matter. Having won the war with Shabia, the leaders in the circles of EPRDF had to bend backwards to appease a villain lest loose an embracing hand in the spheres of the White House when in fact, for all practical purposes, we were supposed to negotiate from point of strength and raise the bar at will and dictate the deal in our own terms. But our leaders opted to depart from a nationalistic fervor and jump into a bandwagon imbued with idealism. They are yet to learn the hard way that idealism is a luxury to those whose day commences with a silver platter on their bed. And needless to say, the leaders are about to pay dearly for failing to listen to the pacemaker of the Ethiopian people. The damage is already done, but the leaders of EPRDF have to prove to the people that they are the kernel of the resilient Ethiopian spirit and rectify the blunder. It is safe to say that, just pushing Shabia 25 kilometers inside its territory and create a buffer zone is not really a success, even though it seems to have materialized the expected military objectives. From a military point of view, Issaias was cornered and his diplomatic game was exposed (so one really has to ask having met the Ethiopian military objective by our heroic deffencess forces does the political objective really used this gains to secure our vital interest). Bringing Shabia to negotiating table when it's fighting merely for its survival is not really a success, instead it could have been an agreement for the complete surrender and renegotiate the terms for Ethiopia's desire for sea outlet and so on. So the political objective is clearly failed to secure our interest and the agreement is really a mockery of our military success against shabia and we are back to square one. Albeit this time against the international community not just shabia. No matter what the "Ethiopian Authority" said regarding the EEBC ruling there is naked reality here and that is THEY GAMBLED WITH THE ALGIERS AGREEMENT AND THEY FAILED. This could be a bitter pill but they have to swallow it, because it is the reality on the ground and they have nowhere to hide, and the best advice they can get is to drop the Algier's agreement quietly and skillfully without triggering any war and border demarcation could be proceeded in the future hopefully when there is democratic government installed in Eritrea. Besides our problem is not border demarcation but poverty, desease and poor management so why haste for demarcation. The issue of peace agreement and demarcation with Eritrea should be discussed openly at the Parliament too, it is no secret that all major decision regarding the agreement and the entire handling of the issue is taken on the (organizational level) by the EPRDF and its central committee, but these issue is not only EPRDF issue it is an Ethiopian issue as well, hence the rightful representatives of Ethiopian people are the members of Peoples representatives council(Parliament) so the parliament has to discuss the issues at hand meticulously and give its decision. Besides the members have to inform their constituent in particular and the public in general. What kind of Parliament is that discussed the war in Iraq but doesn't have any say on EBBC ruling? Can the government honestly say this is democracy. We can not afford to be complacent, we have to keep the pressure on Ethiopian Government to listen to its people, and the people is saying NO TO MY LAND-NO TO MY DIGNITY because that is the only thing we have. No matter what, what is ours is ours, we may be poor but we have a dignity to defend, and a country to safeguard. Regards Gomaraw |
