Deal with the devil?

By G/Egziabher

The future political configuration in Ethiopia seems to have multiple paths.

a)      EPRDF contemplating coalition with undisclosed opposition.

b)      EPRDF secretly opening dialogue with TPLF dissidents.

c)      Revival of Woyane without Meles. Allemseged’s mission.

d)      Some opposition parties rejecting coalition with EPRDF

Well, out of this entire amorphous scenario, one can identify two parallel lines that will never meet:

The coalition with some opposition parties, the dialogue with TPLF dissidents and the revival of Woyane, is a line that envisages the perpetuity of EPRDF’s rule. It is, indeed, a frightening scenario. How can one possibly contemplate to coalesce with a group avowed to destroy the country, not accidentally, but purposefully? Isn’t it tantamount to approve the damage done and build ones carrier on the ruins of Ethiopia?

The other parallel line that rejects to coalesce with EPRDF, calls for transitional government composed of parties, organizations with pan-Ethiopian characteristics and   individuals of integrity could be the salvation of the country.

In order to have a clear vision towards where we are heading, we should examine the nature of the different organizations that call themselves political parties.

The first question we should be asking is, whether sectarian organizations, which waged and are waging civil wars or are propagating ethnic supremacy, can effectively be transformed into all-inclusive national party as opposed to liberation fronts, which fought against colonialism, which may have legitimate right to form a political party?

The same western countries, which approved the dismemberment of Ethiopia, are trying to force EPRDF to accommodate certain opposition organizations in the form of coalition. What hypocrisy!

TPLF/EPRDF is the organization, which created the whole mess and rendered Ethiopia landlocked, gave away sovereign Ethiopian territories, allowed the separation of Eritrea without due process, ruled the country by the barrel of the gun. If those opposition parties really stand for Ethiopia as whole, they should not contemplate association with criminals to legitimize the role they played in destroying the country. Instead, they should ask those mediators to force the present regime to allow free elections, drop it’s guns and disband it’s cadres. Only then opposition parties should seek to be elected and send EPRDF to oblivion. We should bear in mind that we want change in order to undo the injustice done to Ethiopia. To achieve our goal we should totally disassociate ourselves from the present regime, not smooching with it.

TPLF/EPRDF is neither liberation front nor a party, it is a collection of disgruntled and confused elements who, relentlessly worked to subvert the very existence of the country. Their backers were Arab countries, which, from time immemorial wanted the disintegration of Ethiopia. Our so-called liberation fronts were hoping from one Arab country to another wearing turbans. Arabs are not fool, but they gave them what they asked, because, they knew that these confused and disgruntled individuals would work to accomplish their insidious scheme. That is what exactly happened, and we knew it from day one. If anyone claims to be mislead, ought to be either ignorant or utterly hateful towards other Ethiopians.

Let me ask Aite Alemseged and his disciples the following questions:

  • What was the reason behind the reason when your organization was murdering torturing, maiming and killing thousands of Tigreans? Was it crime to feel, act and believe in ones ethiopianhood? Did it make one criminal to reject the Eritrean colonial question? Did dissent on fundamental issues qualified one to be libelled anti Tigray?
  • What were you thinking when you dispatched thousands of Tegadeltees to defend EPLF from Derg? Was Eritrean independence a priority for you? Or was it to assure your survival at the expense of Ethiopia’s survival?
  • Have you ever asked what happened to the tens of thousands of derg soldiers who were stationed in Barentu and surrounding after they surrendered to shaebia? Wasn’t it a duty for an aspiring Ethiopian leadership to demand that POW’s rights be respected? In your judgement, were they defending the sovereingty of Ethiopia or, they were merely paid mercenaries without identity?
  • Did you or any one of your colleagues (including those in power and out of power) say a word against the persecutions of Ethiopians in Eritrea in 1991? Were you not preaching that the struggle was to look after the well being of Tigreans wherever they may be?
  • What was the aim to crush the Affar people’s uprising when they tried to assert their Ethiopianness? Isn’t it a just cause for the Affaris in particular and the rest of us in general?

I do not expect you to answer the above questions, because, the answers are between the lines. It is meant only to tell you that the question was and still is whether to be a true Ethiopian or not to be, to feel an Ethiopian or not feel, to believe in the integrity of Ethiopia or not to believe. These are the inherent attributes of every citizen, we cannot fluctuate them at will.

Some body portrayed Alemseged Gebreamlak as experienced politician from whom we may learn a lot in our endeavour to correct the mistakes made by Meles and company. Let me assure you that, in many Ethiopians’ judgement, people who have been committing betrayal against the country for thirty some years, are not even fit to be lead let alone to lead others.
