Saving Meles: Ethiopian Politicos and Their Scheme

By Korebtit Agar June 29, 2002

COLUMN KOREBTIT:

There is underway another effort of the government of the United States working through surrogates to save the government of Meles Zenawi by creating a coalition with AAPO, ARDUF, EDP, EPRP, and OLF. Additional groups also had tried to participate by requesting that they be allowed to go to Ethiopia and join this sham as opposition parties. At least one group, ARDUF, is reported to have informed those schemers that it is not interested in reliving what the United States had done in 1991. Some members including former board members and officials of AAPO believe that any kind of participation with the United States government sponsored coalition with Meles is counter productive and contrary to the goals and aspirations of the founding father of the organization, Professor Asrat Woldeyesus.

Whether these organizations are acceding to the effort of the United States Government, the point is that there is such a scheme in full steam trying to undermine the ongoing patriotic movement that was galvanized because of the new Ethiopian nationalism against the fraudulent Algiers Agreement and the 13 April 2002 Hague Boundary Commission decision.

What is tragic is the total deterioration of groups such as the EPRP, AAPO et cetera acting now as a clearinghouse for the United States Government and Meles Zenawi. The situation shows the desperation of power monger leaders of different political parties on one side and Meles Zenawi and the United States Government on the other. It is also a tragedy in the making for the people of Ethiopia, for what is planned for their future is no less than the total destruction of their country. It is not an exaggeration to see the future of Ethiopia in such black and white manner. It is not hard to imagine the type of government that Meles and those opportunist political groups are going to form.

However, the real reason that is behind all this hubbla by far has to do with the history of the United States itself and the fact that it is still struggling to resolve its highly polarized race relation. The race-ego issue persists due to the entrenched interest of the people who control both political and economic power. The presence of black or brown faces around the site of power does not in anyway change the fact that the United States is a highly polarized and racists country born out of a slave owning society. Those who are in power have simply redirected their hate and contempt of people of color to peoples of foreign countries.  It simply cannot live with the fact that Ethiopia, a genuine black civilization, has endured and still is vibrant in the world. It is no secret that soon after the end of Second World War, the State Department’s legal office tried to undermine Ethiopia’s interest preparing a sophomoric country profile – a history of Ethiopia that was thrown aside by an exceptionally enlightened and cosmopolitan Roosevelt White House.

There is no doubt that the accommodation of the interest of Egypt and the Arab countries plays a very important role in the scheme to dismember Ethiopia. The wealth of Ethiopia is in its hard working, highly spiritual, and cultured people. The wealth of Ethiopia is not to be measured by barrels of oil or by pounds of metal ores.

What is the interest of the United States in saving a brutal and unpopular government? It defies any rational to justify the proposed effort of the United States in trying to create a coalition government by bringing together groups that do not represent even the elites let alone Ethiopians in general. The most that may be claimed by these groups may be their diversity and antagonism with each other.

The effort of the current government of the United States seems to be the continuation and the preservation  of past governments of the United States to dismember Ethiopia. Since 1975, advisors at the State Department of successive governments of the United States have made the dismemberment of Ethiopia as their singular mission. The policy is to dismember Ethiopia into little pieces with Eritrea controlling the entire Afar Red Sea coastal territories, in which they have succeeded with the independence of Eritrea in 1991.

This was effectively carried out by supporting a fifth-column in the TPLF with Meles Zenawi as its leader that ultimately controlled the TPLF. Thus, the United States with its agents in place started to carry out its conspiratorial objective through the government of Meles Zenawi as its facilitator in order to complete the destruction of Ethiopia by dismembering it into ethnic nations of Tigrie, Oromia, Afar, Somalia, Amhara, et cetera--a new region of  mini ethnic based nations.

The mistaken belief of the United States government officials seems to be that Ethiopia once dismembered into little pieces can be effectively controlled by the United States to promote its selfish interest in the Middle East. The scheme of the dismemberment of Ethiopia is being carried out in two phases: the first is underway as the rubric of democratic federalism, and the second phase would be the establishment of a weak coalition government made up of ethnic groups such as mentioned above. Thus, the anticipated result would be a natural disintegration of the country into separate nations each lead by the members of the coalition or their local counterparts hailing each members ethnic origin.

However, the scheme has already backfired, and the TPLF was gutted with its own corrupt struggle for power. A vigorous and new Ethiopian nationalism is spreading like wildfire engulfing us all and pushing us to great height of Patriotism. This is the current situation that the United States Government’s anti-Ethiopia faction at the State Department is working overtime to undermine. The challenge of the new Ethiopian nationalism is real, and is disrupting the plan to destroy Ethiopia.

The new Ethiopian nationalism is another example of a people with great history who regrouped even after such disastrous ten years under a treasonous government. This shows the persistence of a black race far richer in culture and history than most countries in the world including the United States. One must not assume that the United States government is a friend of Ethiopia. It is not. The United States is a nation burdened with chronic inferiority complex that has to prove to the world how great it is at every turn even at children’s game of hide and seek.

It is within such context that I state with a degree of certainty that the United States Government’s foreign policy, if there is one in regard with Ethiopia other than being episodic and a continuation of Cold-War era scheme, seems to be out of control and manifest a childish stubbornness and tantrum trying to maintain an Eritrea that is not viable on its own, and to save face in its monumental international law blunder in the setup of the Algiers Agreement, the supporting resolutions at the Security Council of the United Nations, and the subsequent decision of the Hague Boundary Commission. Even a beginner student of international law can discern the foolhardy setup of the Hague Boundary Commission and its lack of jurisdiction whether moral or legal on a matter that is eschewed by outside political interest full of fraud, deceit and coercion.

At the same time from another angle the new Ethiopian nationalism is being attacked by expolitburo and other exofficials of the TPLF. One individual in particular, Alemseged Gebreamlak, since his arrival two weeks ago, with the support of opportunists has been trying to organize an exclusive conference for Tigrians trying to undermine the Tigrean International Solidarity for Justice and Democracy (TISJD). He wants to disband the decidedly pro Ethiopian organization by the racist format of the old TPLF. He wants to resurrect antiAmhara and antiEthiopian feelings in the people of Tigrai who have never doubted their Ethiopian identity. In fact, there are some who believe that this particular individual is working for Sebhat Negga (Meles Zenawi) to promote the current scheme of the government of the United States.

Cooperation by such former TPLF leaders with the former officials and of the TPLF in order to protect their  prior policy to dismember Ethiopia is not something surprising. These former TPLF leaders were part and parcel of the ruling body of the TPLF/EPRDF dominated government that cooperated in the dismemberment and independence of Eritrea. It is these same leaders who commanded and sacrificed the children of Tigrei promoting the EPLF’s goal of secession of the Eritrean administrative area. It is also a fact that to this day, these former TPLF leaders have not renounced the alienation of Ethiopian Afar coastal territories. They have not condemned the Algiers Agreement that was the basis of the 13 April 2002 decision of the The Hague Boundary Commission. As a matter of fact individuals such as Gebru Asrat and other high Commanding officers were instrumental in attacking and killing ARDUF fighters who were engaged in battle with Eritrean troops trying to liberate the area from Eritrean occupation.

These former officials of TPLF and their opportunist supporters  have successfully taken over Deki-Alula online news and are now using it to promote their narrow and ethnic based political goals. The founder and the spirit of Deki-Alula has been thrown out through deceit and fraud by these narrow racist destructive group of individuals. It is in the best interest of all of the readers of Deki-Alula to be cognizant of that fact. Deki-Alula online news has been high jacked  by  “www..Dekialula.com”  and the founder Maaza Alula has issued to that effect a statement which can be accessed through Google server, under “deki-alula”.

It has been over two years since the split of TPLF Central Committee. The dissidents have so far been able to avoid confronting or even acknowledging their role in the dismemberment of Eritrea and the background work leading to the Algiers agreement. In general, the former TPLF leaders are responsible for all kinds of human rights violations, violations of the Constitution of 1995, treason under the Penal Code of Ethiopia, and possible economic corruptions for the period starting from the formation of the new transitional government of Ethiopia in 1992 until the day they were forced out of office in 2001.

In regard to the unlikely coalition of the political organizations mentioned above, there is a Biblical saying that illustrate the situation of a dog returning to its own vomit. Meles not only is an enemy of every single Ethiopian political organization but also the most hated man in Ethiopia.   The efforts of successive governments of the United States to dismember and destroy Ethiopia has nothing to do with the wishes of the people of the United States. It has nothing to do with Congress or the Judiciary. It is strictly speaking the renegade and sophomoric work of a handful of very junior officials at the State Department trying to advance their own personal careers.

I Challenge every Ethiopian who claims undying love for Ethiopia to put his or her word in action by rejecting totally the United States government new scheme to save Meles from being ousted from office. And demand the reestablishment of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ethiopia and the Red Sea as its only boarder in that part of the country. I challenge also every Ethiopian not to access www.dekialula.com because of the fraud and deceit involved and the fact that it now serves the racist ethnic based faction of the TPLF.

The price of not speaking up or for hesitation has been enormous. Many Ethiopians have paid so huge a price under the TPLF political fiasco. The struggle for accountability has been replaced by political twists and deception. The Ethiopian Community in the Diaspora cannot be only an observer of the situation in Ethiopia. Strong cooperation within our civic society is the only way out of today’s Ethiopian crisis. Ethiopia needs a strong civil society capable of imposing new democratic conditions, and empowering it should be one of the main goals. We cannot and will not agree to continue to live under the politics of an organization that has blatantly worked against the interest of Ethiopia, and violated the human and democratic rights of Ethiopians.
