Eritrea-Ethiopia Border Conflict/News

Comment:Missing Badime: Where is Badime? How big is it? Is Yirga = Badime as claimed by Melesawian group? If it is, Eritrea should claim Yirga but didn't claim Yirga. Prime Minister Abebe Zenawi, would you please locate Badime for us?

Badme and the Dilemma of the Ethiopian Government Addis Tribune: "It is a sad affair to see the Ethiopian government's attempt to conceal the truth from the Ethiopian public about the ownership of Badme. Telling the Ethiopian people the whole truth without delay would have earned the government some respect. After all, people understand that court decision can only go either way and it is impossible to equally satisfy both litigants.

Ethiopia and Eritrea row after border ruling
ADDIS ABABA/ASMARA (Reuters) - "Ethiopian Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin, speaking after the Ethiopian cabinet met and accepted the ruling, was in no doubt that the new frontier vindicated." Ethiopia's land claims.
"He added some land west of Badme had been awarded to Eritrea as this had not been previously under Ethiopian administration."
[An excerpt taken from the boundary commission documents (page 50 paragraph 4.69 and 4.70)]
4.67: The qualification as to the northern section relates to Tserona. In its reply, Ethiopia stated that a number of specific places mentioned by Eritrea as the location of incidents on which Eritrea was relying were irrelevant, since they were in any event mostly in Eritrea. The words used by Ethiopia were that "Fort Cadorna, Monoxeito, Guna Guna and Tserona' were " mostly…undisputed Eritrean." While Monoxeito and Guna Guna are on the Eritrean side of the Treaty line as determined by the Commission, the Commission finds that, on the basis of the evidence before it, Tserona and Fort Cadorna are not.
Western sector Treaty of 1902 Central Sector Treaty of 1900 Eastern Sector Treaty of 1908
4:70: As to Tserona, the Commision cannot fail to give effect to Ethiopia's statement, made formally in a written pleading submitted to the Commission. It is necessary, therefore, to adjust the Treaty line so as to ensure that it is placed in Eritrean territory.

Border Ruling: can Ethiopians Expect Fairness from the UNSC?
By: Rev. Tom E. Guerra, Ph,D. (African Christian Center)
It is high time the international community listen to the cries of the Ethiopian people for justice against ill-meant colonial treaties. The colonialist motive was to suffocate Ethiopia by depriving it of access to its sea ports. Land-locked Ethiopia is a poor and weak nation that would depend on the mercy and mood of its hostile neighbors.

Addis Ababa (April 19, 2002):Government officials and the ruling party have been busy giving statements that says Ethiopia won and Eritrea lost again, this time on the “legal battle field.” They have also been busy attacking the private press and opposition parties who have a different opinion as to the entire legal process that Ethiopia underwent as regards to resolving the dispute with Eritrea. Addis Ababa (April 19, 2002):"We the Afar have responded to every call for Ethiopia’s defense, but when we are invaded we have been left to deal with the invaders by ourselves. The Djibouti government very well armed them, with heavy and modern weapons against our Klashinkovs. The government is making a very big mistake to take the side of the Issas, and to allow them to move further and further into our land. Next year they will be in Addis Ababa, and maybe that’s when people will wake up," said an Afar in Awash town explaining why they feel let down.

Ethiopia-Eritrea border ruling a flawed solution
BusinessDay
The rush to yank Eritrea away from the rest of Ethiopia before establishing institutional mechanisms for the expression of the will of the people in Eritrea was not accidental.
It was a political strategy designed to exploit widespread confusion, disorganisation, and lack of vision and leadership among competing political groups during the transitional period in Ethiopia from 1991 to 1995.

Laws and Proclamations - EPRDFS' Style
By: Yonas (March 19, 2002)
After wasting ten years in power the EPRDF government is now telling us that it is in a "Sorry State!" and wants to start again! Positive expectation from this government is just a west of time which at best can only contribute in deflecting our attention from the main issues of lack of accountability, democracy and the Rule of Law in the country.

The legal claim for the respect of Ethiopia's right of access to the Red Sea is neither warmongering nor inconsistent.
