Chewing the khat in Ethiopia
BBC (April, 10, 2004)Even by the placid standards of its species, it was a relaxed sheep. It made no attempt to move when I tried to squeeze by in the narrow, stony lane.
And then I saw the reason. It was munching discarded khat leaves - and why not?

Editorial: The Reporter The Tree of Life
The long-drawn-out rainy season is just round the corner. It is, therefore, natural for both rural and urban members of our society to be thinking in terms of sowing seeds or of planting trees. This is to say that most of our people would be engaged in agricultural activities before too long. There is no doubt at all that Ethiopian peasants would be making the right decisions on what exactly to cultivate in the course of next month.

Economy The Path Forward: An Economic Viewpoint
By Sahle Mariam
No doubt that Ethiopians are political animals. In living rooms, weddings, bars, etc., all conversations (assuming it is between trusted friends) will touch on politics. The basis of one’s political position is almost always driven by principle. That, in itself, is very admirable but in a country as materially poor as Ethiopia (with recurring droughts and famines), some positions should be based on economics. Likewise, most Ethiopian politicians invoke economics solely to score political points.

Analysis ON CURBING THE RISING POPULATION
by G. E. Gorfu (4/9/2004)
The present rate of population rise in Ethiopia is alarming. I first addressed this issue on: Suggestions in Solving the Hunger Problem (1)over a year ago and Family Planning was one of several ways suggested as a solution to the problem. Since that article was written, the situation has not abated, but if anything, it has only worsened with the population topping over seventy million. Population control is hardly ever an easy problem, and it is not going to be easy to solve here.

Analysis ASCENT OF UNILATRERALISM
IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE BLUE NILE SUB-BASIN

Yosef Yacob, JD, LLM, PhD (4/9/2004)
Optimal and sustainable use and development of international rivers as well as protection and preservation are dependent on cooperation, and cooperation is an essential basis for the attainment and maintenance of an equitable allocation of the uses and benefits of international watercourses. The advantages of cooperation between states sharing an international river have been amply demonstrated by scholars and inescapably illustrated in game theory.

Law WATER IS LIFE FIGHTING FOR THE NILE WATERS
By G. E. GORFU
This world has always been one of strife and struggle, where no justice, reason, or rhyme ever seems to prevail. If one has oil and the powerful want it, they will come down with their army and weapons, and try to get it. If one has gold and diamonds, they will come and get that too. Now it is water they want. The tables have turned and Egypt is trying to dictate its terms on the rightful owners of the Nile that they should not build dams or make any development projects ‘without consent’, and is even making threats of war.[Source: Aiga}

Law Where do we reach by having a number of laws issued daily?
Who questions the legality of the laws?

Law is . . . not simply a set of spoken, written or formalized rules that people blindly follow. Rather, law represents the formalization of behavioral rules, about which a high percentage of people agree, that reflect behavioral propensities and that offer potential benefits to those who follow them.
